1. What is Our Goal?

Our goal is simple: to create a purr-fectly delightful space for movie mewers of all stripes to indulge in their love for classic Indian films and television series.

Whether you’re a seasoned movie critic or a casual film enthusiast, this is your den for the enchanting world of films that have passed the test of time. However, we never cross the line into trolling. We believe in positive criticism, not personal attacks on artists based on gender, religion, or politics.

We believe that movies, TV shows, and OTT series are not just entertainment; but are portals to new worlds, vehicles for storytelling, and reflections of the human (and feline) experience. We aim to celebrate the artistry, creativity, and magic of cinema, from the latest blockbusters to the timeless classics.

2. Who’s behind the curtains at Meaow Matinee Magic?

Well, let me introduce myself – I’m Sumit Guha, the Chief Meaow-vie Connoisseur, who ensures every post is as purr-fect as a cat’s nap.

I’m a Graphic Designer with an inquisitive mind. I simply adore the various forms of art and love to create new ideas using them. Currently, I’m engaged in working with Specially Abled children, teaching them all about Computers. Interestingly, I find myself learning a lot from these amazing individuals.

In a bustling metro or a quiet corridor, you’ll likely spot me curled up with a book – I relish everything from Harry Potter to Hindu Mythology! True to my Gemini nature, my moods can be as unpredictable as a cat’s. While I’m generally quite the chatty cat, I’m actually an introvert at heart and cherish my moments of solitude.

3. What sparked the idea of writing a movie blog?

Growing up in a typical middle-class Indian household, our family shared a hidden love for movies, though we never flaunted it openly. Today, I confide that I learned the names “Amitabh” and “Rekha” long before I could even recite my grandparents’ names.

Memories of my childhood in Asansol are filled with images of hand-drawn posters on the by-lanes, teasing us with glimpses of upcoming films. Our neighborhood had a few single-screen movie halls, but as kids, our movie choices were limited to classics like King Kong or Disney favorites.

In my college days, I made a move to South Calcutta (nee Kolkata), where a buffet of Cinema Halls awaited. It was during one of those yearly Filmfare Awards ceremonies on TV that I had an epiphany – I had watched almost all the movies nominated. Until then, it was all just entertainment, but enrolling in a Film Institute for Scripting course under the guidance of Ma’am Sunetra Ghatak opened my eyes to the true magic of Cinema.

We often watch films and casually remark on them, but the hard work and dedication behind each movie is something we rarely acknowledge. Film magazines were sparse, and more about gossip and glamour than the real essence of filmmaking.

Exploring World Cinema introduced me to the artistry, grandeur, and sacrifices that define the glittering world of Tinsel Town. And thus, my desire to write about cinema was born, to pay homage to the unsung heroes behind the silver screen.

4. What differentiates Meaow Matinee Magic from others?

Every Friday morning, social media explodes with reviews of the latest films and series on OTT platforms. However, many of these reviews seem biased, lacking the true merit of the product. They’re either overly praised or needlessly torn apart due to personal agendas, from affiliation with rival fan groups to political or religious biases, even hashtag campaigns for trolling.

5. Why the Meaows?

Meaows are simply the cat’s whiskers when it comes to being self-satisfying creatures – they don’t rely on any big critic’s purr-view but rather watch the show and give their verdict which may be completely different from the popular sayings.

A few traits that differentiate them from other animals –

  • Self-contented creatures with an air of mystery
  • Classy and aloof, they know their worth
  • Quick to show their claws when the moment calls
  • Just like true stars only let you pet them when they feel like it
  • Moody and sometimes lazy, but they prefer to say it as ‘work-shy’

Being in a house filled with these furry divas, I find myself relating more to their quirks and have attached this blog to their enchanting ways.”
